Power-Distribution Monitoring

2001

Identifying the failover risk

Identified a capacity-planning flaw in redundant A/B power distribution: each feed could operate within its normal loading limit, yet overload the surviving feed when both loads combined during failover.

The backup path therefore needed enough spare capacity to carry the combined load; otherwise, a transfer intended to maintain power could trip the remaining feed and interrupt customer service.

Developing the monitoring application

Developed the IDC reporting application to process manually collected current readings, flag loads exceeding failover-safe limits, and support work orders to redistribute customer loads. This helped engineers assess capacity against failure conditions, not just normal operation.

Adoption and training

The application was adopted across AT&T data centers, and I trained engineers nationwide in its use.
